Halloween might be over, and we may or may not have already been playing Christmas songs but 2021 saw costumes that were bigger and better than before giving serious inspiration for next year.

Halloween goes one of two ways for many you either go frightful or fashionable, and to quote the teen rom-com of the noughties, Mean Girls, “in girl world, Halloween is the one night of a year when a girl can dress like a total s**t, and no other girls can say anything about it.” So, the choice is completely up to you as to which direction you choose but these are some of our choices for winning ‘best-dressed’ (like you would as an 8-year-old at a Halloween party).

Social media saw an array of costumes from family and couple costumes  becoming notorious characters from the silver screen. The Legend-Teigen household went traditional channelling the Adams Family. American influencers and family YouTubers The LaBrant Fam became Disney villains. And newly famous family The Herberts were Joe, Love and Henry-Forty Goldberg from the psychotic Netflix hit You.

The theme for Halloween this year seemed to be originality paired with movie characters as some never-before-seen costumes flooded our feeds. A new favourite this year was becoming the Pretty woman herself, Vivian Ward. Maura Higgins was the perfect fit for Julia Robert’s iconic “big mistake, big, huge” character despite not having a Richard Gere on her arm to complete the look.

Movies and TV shows hold the most inspiration for the greatest costumes with Netflix top hit Squid Games taking lead, with quite possibly the most comfortable and easily put-together costume yet. If you’re a last-minute kind of person, this is definitely a go-to whether you choose an ill-fated player, a heartless guard, or mysterious front man.

Harry Styles even got in on the action despite being on his ‘Love on tour’ tour, dressing up as Dorothy from Wizard of Oz. The treat people with kindness singer took Halloween to the next level adorning the infamous ruby slippers and a matching bow to hold back his luscious locks. Harry’s New York show was hashtagged #Harry-ween and even treated the fans to rendition of somewhere over the rainbow to match his Wizard of Oz themed costume.

Ever since the DC comic Suicide Squad premiered in 2016, Harley Quinn and the Joker have been a Halloween favourite. However, with The Birds of Prey filmed being released this year, Harley Quinn made a significant return with many becoming “Daddy’s little monster”. Thanks to TikTok many creators have used the occasion to create their own Harley Quinn looks to the viral sounds of Margot Robbie.

The question is what will we see next year? Will it be more authentic costumes, or will it be 2022’s biggest tv show hit that inspires the night to be anything but yourself. Either way these 2021 costumes can help you get prepped for next year.
